FOUNDER - MATT PITTAWAY
I began playing violin and singing in boy's choirs at the age of 5. After a few years I was
dubbed a "prodigy" which means basicly I wasn't good at much else! Music was a big part
of my family life. My mom played the old pump organ and both my parents sang in the church choir.
It was my 15th Detroit "white Christmas" when I got my first guitar and began mimicking popular
Motown music; Beatle songs etc. I got into the Rock-n-Roll scene and began playing the piano at
age 16. Before I was out of high school I was being scouted by record companies. I could
invent songs easily, but I was never satisfied with the lyrics.
The '70's Rock lifestyle and Eastern philosophies left me empty, and I began reading the
teachings of Christ and realised I needed God's help to be a complete person.
I got involved in Gospel and CCM music, put together a band and recieved a record/tour
deal. After much consideration I turned this offer down.
The advent of the computer age intrigued me and I began studying music business, internet,
and related subjects at the library. This is what led to the formation of A.N.P.
THE MUSIC BUSINESS
Until recently, 6 major studios held a monopoly on the record industry. They could do this
because of the steep cost of quality analog recording equipment. Their power swayed the radio
stations and the retail outlets. They operate by scouting young talented bands or individuals,
offering them what seems a large sum of money, say $50,000.00 to do a record/tour deal. In
some instances the naive performer's contract is written so that after the promotional tour, the
expenses are billed to the performer! Artists have made millions for a record company only to
find out they are in debt after the tour!
It is obvious that if a contract offers an artist say .25 cents per CD and the record company
keeps the $12.75 who is getting rich off a million seller! Artists who have struggled for years or
are young and gullible jump at the chance to "make it". a VERY FEW go on to make it big and
become 'idols'. They become richer and richer while the tens of thousands of the rest of us
struggle along at our "day jobs".That's the system.
THE COMPUTER REVOLUTION
In the early 90's as PC's became more powerful and the internet grew, a phenomena began
to take place. Because CD's are 16 bit like most PC's, musicians began producing CD quality
music on computers with almost no overhead. IN Seattle, WA the "Indie" (independent) record
scene began taking off. and by the mid '90's Indie music had taken 20% of the music market in
the US. That's over 2 Billion Dollars in sales! They did it by distributing over the internet and at
small record stores.
This broke free the hold of record companies over stores and radio stations to a degree such
that more local stations are willing to play local music, and stores are willing to sell locally
produced CD's. This is a door of opportunity as whenever new technology effects an industry,
but it may not be open for long.
THE BUSINESS REVOLUTION
While computers are changing the music business, the retail business is experiencing change
also. The '80's saw explosive growth in 2 new marketing areas: Shop at home TV shows, and
Warm Marketing. Everyone knows about TV shopping shows, and Warm Marketing is people
selling products to friends or those in thier "sphere of influence". This would include multi-level
marketing which has gotten a bad reputation, but nonetheless is a massive trend because it
enables people with little investment to start and build a business.
ARTISTS IN BUSINESS
The computer and business revolution has paved the way for musicians to make a living
producing their music as never before. The big record companies have to spend around $250,000
to produce a master CD. We spend a few thousand. The record companies pump millions into
advertising, promotions, tours, etc. We don't need any of this IF WE WORK TOGETHER.
The reason the record companies have dominated is because they play on our greed to make
us compete. I was sickened to see this fact played out even in Gospel and CCM music. They put
us in "Battle of the Bands" where we stomp on each other trying to climb the pile of the bodies of
our fellow artists so we can be prostituted by a monopoly. If we work together we can all make a
solid income producing our own music.
YOUR PART
There are hundreds of people in every town on earth who have talents, equipment, investment
capital, that can be used to produce music. Artist's Network Productions has a basic goal: Organize
those wanting to be in the music business to work together so that we can make a living doing what
we love.
The only parameters we have are these: Any music style is accetable. The Lyrics have to be
positive. This means songs promoting violence, drug abuse, promiscuity etc. will be rejected.
Our
marketing plan depends on people with money buying our products for their kid's and grandkids;
they don't care what it sounds like, but they care about the message.
If you like our vision so far, and you want to be in the music business, send us some detailed
info. on yourself, talents, connections, equipment, resources, anything you think would contribute.
Then We'll send you some more details. This is a "Work in Progress" so give us your input!
Thanks for your time.
Sincerely,
Matt Pittaway
